Before teeth appear, wipe baby's gums with a clean, soft damp cloth after every feeding. This removes milk residue and bacteria, and gets your baby used to mouth cleaning.
As soon as the first tooth erupts, switch to a soft-bristled baby toothbrush. Use only a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste — this tiny amount is safe even if swallowed.
Never put your baby to sleep with a bottle of milk, formula, or juice. Sugars pool around the teeth all night and cause "bottle rot" — severe decay in very young children. Water is the only safe option if needed.
Book your baby's first dental visit within 6 months of the first tooth appearing, or by their first birthday — whichever comes first. Early visits help catch problems and get babies comfortable with the dentist.
For sore gums, gently rub with a clean finger or offer a chilled (not frozen) teething ring. Avoid teething gels containing benzocaine — they are not recommended for babies under 2.
